The Healing Powers of Medicinal Mushrooms

One of my favorite topics, at the moment, in the health and nutrition world are the benefits of medicinal mushrooms (Fungi!).  These ancient medicinal shrooms have been touted as nature’s best kept secret.  While studying integrative medicine in my fellowship at the University of Arizona, we had a few short lectures on the topic by Dr. Andrew Weil, a big mushroom advocate and studier of mycology.  This peaked my interest and, since then, I’ve done some research of my own and have begun to incorporate these powerful ‘fun-guys’ into my daily routine.  

There have been many scientific studies on various mushrooms and their immune-activating and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their strong cancer fighting capabilities.  Of note, these medicinal mushrooms do not include the culinary white button mushroom family (portobello, crimini, and regular white mushrooms), which should be consumed in moderation.  If you do eat them they should always be cooked at high temperatures due to their carcinogenic properties.  Step away from the salad bar mushrooms!  Medicinal mushrooms, on the other hand, do not grow in the ground but rather on or around trees.  Many are called shelf mushrooms because they resemble a shelf along the trunk of a tree. These mushrooms require an extraction process to reap the full benefits.      

You despise mushrooms?  Don’t fear! The good news is that the medicinal mushrooms can easily be integrated into your diet due to the fact that many companies are making them in powdered or liquid form, often times with several types combined.  There is even a mushroom coffee which is supposed to balance the caffeine to prevent the crash later.  

The following are the top seven medicinal mushrooms and their health benefits:

  1. Shiitake:  These powerful Asian mushrooms are full of minerals (especially copper!) and B vitamins.  They have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties as well as anti-inflammatory.  They also have anti-cancer properties and provide liver protection.  Always buy organic when you can as there are many ‘mock-up’ varieties.  Remove the stems and slice thinly before cooking.
  2. Cordyceps: This exotic parasitic mushroom is unique because of the location and way that it grows.  These powerhouse fungi have been proven to increase endurance and resistance to fatigue.  This mushroom also provides potent antioxidant properties.  There are ongoing studies on its effects on kidney and liver function and immune cancers that are quite promising.  
  3. Reishi:  This mushroom is an immunity badass and a true ‘superfood’.  It is too bitter to eat as food but is widely available in supplement form.  They are known for their strong immune and anti-inflammatory properties.  They strengthen the body’s defenses to fight against allergies, cancer, heart disease and infections.
  4. Turkey Tail:  This mushroom gets its name from its unique shape and color making it look like a wild turkey tail.  There are many exciting studies that show promising immune boosting for women who are being treated for breast cancer.  It is a cold and flu fighter and may help heal some strains of human papilloma virus. It also aids in digestion by promoting the growth of your gut’s good bacteria.  
  5. Lion’s Mane:  This powerful mushroom has become recognized for enhancing brain function/cognition (memory, focus and concentration) and stimulate nerve repair, as well as helping with a number of ailments including improving insulin sensitivity and gut protection against harmful bacteria.
  6. Chaga:  Another powerhouse in the mushroom world, this fun-guy has many health benefits.  It is an immune system regulator, cancer fighter, anti-inflammatory, liver protector, antioxidant, stomach protector and reduces LDL cholesterol.

I have been enjoying the Four Sigmatic brand because they make it so easy to use with their convenient little packets and various blends.  I have been adding them to my daily smoothie, along with collagen protein powder.  I also love the mushroom hot cacao mix for an evening treat.  During the winter months I use mushroom immune products by Host Defense.  I particularly like their Myco Shield immune support peppermint spray.  I haven’t tried the mushroom coffee yet, but that is next on the list!  Happy mushrooming!
